“You darkness, that I come from,

I love you more than all the fires

that fence in the world,

for the fire makes

a circle of light for everyone,

and then no one outside learns of you.

But the darkness pulls in everything:

Shapes and fires, animals and myself,

How easily it gathers them!-

Powers and people-

And it is possible a great energy

Is moving near me.

I have faith in nights.”

Rilke, trans. Robert Bly

Like the darkness of the womb, like the land of po in Hawaiian cosmology, it is in the dark that new life sparks, creative possibilities arise.  The earth is born from this place.  The seeds of the future are the mammalian eggs, the Mother capacity for conception.  It is the Young Ones, not the human children we may or may not have borne, but the seeds of our imaginations, our dreams and holy desires, the Young Ones of the New Story, the Not Yet who beckons from the future.  We are fertile with possibility.
