Healing the Robin

Inspired by Linda McCarrriston

We heard the clunk together,

bird’s flight shattered against your bedroom window,

and froze.

I, the mother, had to face this

Wanted the robins to stay

Blooming red

on the pyracanthus

Willing life to flourish when wounds

Filled our home.

Breathing  courage to step towards death

I found instead a bird in shock

Quietly blinking

Still in my hand

Its full black lashes on the world returning

Breathing, blinking.

I filled a shoebox with my blue flannel shirt

Housed the cat.

Placed it in the winter sun

Just warm enough

Close to the tree

And family

Doing for robin

What I could not do for you

Knowing that if she could live

So could you

And did.
