She Had Some Songs to Sing

Inspired by Joy Harjo’s She Had Some Horses

She had songs that were loud and made you

clap your hands

She had songs that were loud and made you

want to hide

She had songs locked up in a tree

She had songs riding on the wing of a hawk

She had songs carried deep on the

back of a whale

She had some songs to sing

She had songs who traveled by flute

She had songs who blew out a trumpet

She had songs who thumped on a drum

She had songs who hid beneath keys

black and white

waiting to be released by love and passion

or chance.

She had some songs to sing

She had songs who walked in the desert

thirsty for years

She had songs who slept in the

caves

She had songs who tiptoed silently in the

rain forest dripping.

she had songs who surfed on storm waves

and songs who floated on placid lakes

She had songs who walked barefoot

through fire and grew in value

She had some songs to sing

She had songs dark as a moonless night

with no stars

She had songs light and sweet

as cotton candy

She had songs carved from wood

one slice at a time

She had songs of white marble

cut from the side of a mountain in Italy

She had songs made of blood

which came from the splinters of

a broken heart

making a river which brought us all to life

She had some songs to sing

She had some songs for traveling

She had some songs for restless babies

She had some songs for angry dogs

which also worked for some of her men.

She had songs to cook dinner by

She had many songs good for crying

She had many more to dance by.

She had some songs to sing.

She had some songs that were for sale.

She had some songs that refused to be sung

turned to stone

sunk to river’ s bottom

She had songs that came straight from God and

through the throat of a human angel

All of her songs came from the same place
